Something every realtor fears happened to Patrick. He was putting out Open House signs and was hurt by a hit-and-run driver. Thankfully, he was able to memorize the driver’s plate number and the police caught them the next day.
About a week later, Patrick began experiencing pain from the accident and sought treatment from a chiropractor. The chiropractor referred him to his family physician who then sent him to a specialist. After a series of tests over several weeks, Patrick was diagnosed with spinal issues, and surgery was recommended. However, no doctor would perform the procedure since Patrick didn’t have health insurance.
“The auto accident I was in turned my world upside down. I had no idea how I was going to pay all the bills that were pouring in.” -Patrick
Looking for Options
Desperate for alternatives, he researched his condition online. While he was trying to find an affordable solution, he frequently visited the ER and doctor’s offices for pain relief. Eventually, his family physician suggested he go to Emory’s ER in Atlanta where a surgeon couldn’t deny treatment.
He followed that advice and was hospitalized for a week before the surgery was finally performed. After being discharged the day following his surgery, he was unable to perform basic tasks like opening medication bottles or doors, holding eating utensils, or flipping a light switch. He struggled with balance and had to move in with his daughter, who sought a rehab facility willing to accept him without insurance.
Recovering After Surgery
Luckily, Brooks Rehab in Jacksonville agreed to help. Patrick had to cover the initial costs, and eventually they provided a scholarship for his treatment. Even with the scholarship, it was a long way from home, and he had to pay for hotel accommodations, transportation, and food.
The rehab stay helped improve his function and ability to live alone, but Patrick has lingering issues with his hand function and can only use them for a few hours at a time. He hopes to continue rehab therapy with a physical therapist closer to home if he can find an affordable cash-pay option.
Where Things are Now
Patrick is still unable to drive. The only income he has had is from real estate sales made before the accident and a few broker price opinions since being released from medical care. He applied for unemployment, disability, and Medicaid but was denied all three.
“When I contacted my office they told me to contact KW Cares and I am so thankful for everything they did for me.” -Patrick
KW Cares was able to provide grant funds to cover a portion of Patrick’s travel expenses plus two months of living expenses, so he can focus on rehab and getting back to the job he loves.
Today, Patrick is back in the game in Georgia, though he’s still working to regain function. He walks every morning to build up his strength and spends as much time as he can with his two granddaughters, Betsey and Caroline. We’re thrilled to see him doing so well!
