Andy Kontz is an associate with the Sioux Falls Market Center, and father of two with his wife, Billie. The Kontzes led an idyllic life, until Andy was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
After undergoing high-dose chemotherapy and while recovering from his long-awaited bone marrow transplant, Andy worked hard to keep his business going and support his family.
While in remission, he struggled with kidney problems, chronic pain, low energy, and other complications. His doctors urged him to take six months off from work so his body could make a full recovery.
Facing astronomical medical expenses and only able to put in a fraction of his normal work time, Andy then faced another stumbling block. He required abdominal surgery for severe pain, followed by liver problems, which doctors feared would lead to liver failure. Thankfully, Andy bounced back after a month-long recovery.
Despite the rigors of his high-dose chemotherapy, Andy and his family received an unexpected miracle: Billie was expecting another child! And on June 13, 2017, Addison Josef Kontz entered the world.
How KW Cares Helped:
The Sioux Falls Market Center and local Realtor Association partnered to raise $20,000 for Andy and his family. They also provided meals, fluffy pillows, and even shoveled the Kontzes’ sidewalk. When the family was challenged even further due to Andy’s need for additional surgery, KW Cares provided a grant for additional assistance.
“I want to thank KW Cares for all of its support and prayers! Without you, we never would have made it this far.” – Andy Kontz
