On August 8, 2023, Eric’s family lost everything to the devastation of the Maui wildfires. High winds caused fire to sweep through the area, taking homes and small businesses with it, leaving nothing but ashes and crumbled buildings.

“Our perfect home on Front Street in Lahaina disappeared in flames fanned by 80-mile-per-hour winds. The town I have lived in for 30 years was destroyed. It is still painful to recall those early days.” —Eric

On August 10, Eric returned to where his home had once been. There, underneath the rubbles, were the remnants of an entry from his journal.

“Within 48 hours of the catastrophe, Ray from my Market Center had reached out and recommended I apply for a [KW Cares] grant to help with our immediate needs. That immediate response did more for me and my family than words can express. The much-needed financial, housing and emotional support made a very scary tomorrow much easier to face.” —Eric
